The Centigraphe Sport in aluminium marks the starting point of F.P. Journe's sports-watch program. Its origin was a request from a triathlon-competing collector who wanted a watch light enough to wear while training. Journe responded by engineering the case, bracelet and even the movement in aluminium, leaving only the crystals as standard components. The first completed watch was ultimately donated to charity before reaching the collector, and the result introduced a construction approach then virtually unknown among high-end Geneva watchmakers.
Its 42 mm case and bracelet are made from aluminium alloy, with rubber sections incorporated into the links, case flanks and crown to help absorb impacts. The dial combines aluminium and sapphire, with applied numerals and indexes surrounding the three chronograph registers. The extremely low weight is immediately noticeable on the wrist and became the defining characteristic of the concept. This watch established the basic formula that later LineSport models would follow.
